City Guide: Eureka

One thing that my husband and I have in common is that we much prefer driving to flying, so naturally, we love exploring our state and the states around us on road-trips. Last week we drove up the coast to Eureka, which is a little town in the redwood forests of Northern California. When we told people we'd be doing this, everyone asked... why? We asked, why not? Why wouldn't you want to spend a few days in an incredible, wooded, coastal city, in a refurbished loft, with nothing to do but relax, eat, and explore. It was a lovely escape from the norm -- the perfect little getaway.

Here's a little look into our trip and where you should visit on the California coast.

We stopped at a beach in Mendocino on the way up. The skies were orange from the fires.

We rented a quirky Airbnb called the Coat Shop Loft, located above an old coat shop in Eureka's Old Town. It was quite lovely, with a large living space, updated features, and a clawfoot tub in the living room. Perfect for a romantic weekend getaway.

The next day we explored the coast: the expansive Big Lagoon beach in Trinidad, a cute tiny art town named Orick (with a country store!), and a beach off the Orick freeway. We even saw majestic elk near Trinidad!

On our last day, we had brunch at the Beachcomber Cafe in Trinidad - super cute, homey spot with delicious, organic food. The lighthouse and beach in Trinidad were amazing! We definitely recommend taking the stairs all the way down. The city of Arcata's main square was surrounded by chalk art created by (and advertising) local businesses - the David Bowie goat was my favorite!

On the drive back we made one final stop in Marshall to watch the sunset on the river.
